Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Add the 1 tablespoon of salt to the boiling water.

Add the spaghetti to the boiling water, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Cook according to package directions, usually 8-12 minutes, until al dente.

While the pasta cooks, prepare the marinara sauce. Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat.

Pour the crushed tomatoes into the saucepan. Stir in the dried basil, dried oregano, granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and black pepper.

Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it cook for at least 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld. If the sauce becomes too thick, you can add a splash of the pasta cooking water.

Once the spaghetti is cooked, drain it thoroughly using a colander.

Either toss the drained spaghetti directly with the marinara sauce in the pot, or serve individual portions of spaghetti topped with the sauce.
