Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

Add the shrimp to the hot oil and season with salt and black pepper. Pan sear for 1 to 2 minutes per side, until just pink and cooked through. Be careful not to overcook.

Remove the cooked shrimp from the pan and set aside on a plate.

Reduce the heat to medium-low. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the pan, then add the minced garlic.

Sauté the garlic for 30 seconds, stirring constantly, until fragrant. Do not let it brown.

If using, stir in the Calabrian chili paste and sauté for another 30 seconds.

Add the halved cherry tomatoes to the pan and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 5 minutes, until they begin to soften and release their juices.

Pour in the dry white wine and bring to a simmer. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the wine has slightly reduced.

Stir in the dry orzo and toast for 1 minute, stirring continuously.

Pour in 2 cups of chicken or vegetable broth. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until the orzo is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed. If the orzo becomes too dry before it's fully cooked, add additional broth, 1/4 cup at a time, until desired consistency is reached.

Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese and the chopped fresh basil.

Return the seared shrimp to the pan and gently toss to combine and warm through.

Serve immediately, garnished with extra grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil, if desired.
