To prepare the caramel, melt 1 cup of granulated sugar in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once the sugar is fully melted and amber in color, add 1/2 cup of butter and stir until completely combined. Then, carefully pour in 1/2 cup of heavy cream and stir until smooth. Remove the saucepan from the heat and set aside to cool slightly.

To prepare the ganache, place 1 cup of chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl. Pour 1/2 cup of hot heavy cream over the chocolate chips. Let it sit for 1-2 minutes, then stir gently until the chocolate chips are completely melted and the mixture is smooth and glossy.

To prepare the crust, crush 1 package of Oreo cookies into fine crumbs. You can do this in a food processor or by placing them in a Ziploc bag and crushing with a rolling pin. In a medium bowl, combine the crushed Oreos with 1/4 cup of melted butter. Mix until the crumbs are evenly moistened. Press this mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking pan to form the crust.

To prepare the filling, in a large mixing bowl, beat 8 ounces of softened cream cheese with 1 cup of powdered sugar using an electric mixer until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Gently fold in 1 container (8 ounces) of whipped topping until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

To assemble the dessert, pour the prepared caramel evenly over the Oreo crust in the 9x13 inch pan. Next, carefully spread the cream cheese filling over the caramel layer. Finally, pour the chocolate ganache over the cream cheese filling, spreading it gently to cover the entire surface.

Garnish the layered dessert with any remaining crushed Oreos, if desired. Place the dessert in the refrigerator and chill for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow all the layers to set completely.

Once thoroughly chilled and set, slice the layered Oreo dessert into squares and serve.
