Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a small baking dish (approximately 6x4 inches or similar rectangular size) or line with parchment paper.

If you don't have pre-made butternut squash puree, cook butternut squash until very tender (steaming or boiling works well), then scoop into a blender and process until completely smooth and pureed. Measure out 1 cup of the puree.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the pureed butternut squash, unsweetened cocoa powder, and protein powder. Mix thoroughly with a spoon or spatula until a thick, uniform brown batter is formed. Ensure there are no lumps of protein powder.

Spoon the brownie batter into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly to fill the bottom. If using, generously sprinkle the sugar-free chocolate chips over the entire surface of the brownie batter.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the brownies are set and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean (a few moist crumbs are fine for fudgy brownies).

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before cutting into 4 squares and serving. These brownies are delicious warm or chilled.
