In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

Mix the ingredients thoroughly by hand until well combined. Form the mixture into 4 uniform patties.

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Once the oil is hot, place the hamburger patties into the skillet. Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, or until they are nicely browned.

Remove the cooked patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.

In the same skillet (do not clean it, as the fond will add flavor), add 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onion to the skillet.

Sauté the onions over medium heat until they are softened and caramelized to a rich brown color, stirring occasionally.

Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour over the cooked onions. Stir well to coat the onions with the flour and cook for 1 minute, allowing the flour to cook out.

Pour in 2 cups of beef broth, stirring continuously to prevent lumps and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.

Add 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper to the gravy. Stir all ingredients together and bring the gravy to a simmer.

Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the simmering onion gravy in the skillet. Cover the skillet with a lid.

Allow the hamburger steaks to simmer in the gravy for 10-15 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened to your desired consistency and the steaks are cooked through.

Serve the hamburger steaks and gravy hot, typically over mashed potatoes.
