Carefully place the two unopened cans of sweetened condensed milk horizontally on their sides into the slow cooker pot.

Pour hot (but not boiled) tap water over the cans until they are completely submerged. Ensure there is an additional 2 inches (approximately 5 centimeters) of water covering the top of the cans.

Place the lid securely on the slow cooker. Cook on the 'low' setting for 8 to 10 hours. For a lighter, slightly less thick caramel, cook for 8 hours. For a more intensely caramelly, darker, and thicker product, cook for 10 hours.

Once the cooking time is complete, carefully remove the slow cooker lid. Allow the cans to cool completely within the water bath before attempting to handle them. This can take several hours.

Once cooled, carefully remove the cans from the slow cooker. Open the cans and scoop out the rich, thick dulce de leche. Enjoy it warm or chilled.
