Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8.5x4.5 inch loaf pan, or line with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In a separate medium bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork until mostly smooth but with a few small lumps remaining.

Add the buttermilk, melted unsalted butter, large egg, and vanilla extract to the mashed bananas. Whisk until well combined.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir with a spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are fine.

Gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly.

Bake for 55-65 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. If the top starts to brown too quickly, you can loosely tent it with aluminum foil.

Remove the banana bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes before carefully transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
