Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8x8 inch baking dish or a similar-sized oven-safe dish.

In a medium bowl, combine the 1/4 cup light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg. Add the melted butter and stir to form a paste. Add the cored and halved apples to the bowl and toss gently to coat them evenly with the spice mixture.

Arrange the coated apple halves, cut-side up, in the prepared baking dish.

In a separate medium bowl, combine the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup light brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold butter pieces. Use your fingers or a pastry blender to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Evenly sprinkle the oat topping mixture over the apples in the baking dish.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork and the oat topping is golden brown and crispy. Cooking time may vary depending on the size and type of apples.

Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. These baked apples are delicious served warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
