Preheat your oven to 220°C. Prepare a square baking pan (approximately 20cm x 20cm) by ensuring it is clean and ready for the melted butter.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the self-raising flour and buttermilk. Mix with a wooden spoon or spatula until a shaggy dough forms. Be careful not to overmix; a few dry spots are fine.
Pour the melted butter evenly into the bottom of the prepared square baking pan.

Carefully transfer the dough into the pan, on top of the melted butter. Using your hands or a spatula, gently spread the dough out to cover the entire bottom of the pan, ensuring it reaches all the corners.

Using a spatula or a sharp knife, gently score the dough into nine equal squares directly in the pan. Do not cut all the way through to the bottom, just enough to mark the scone portions.

Evenly sprinkle the diced bacon over the scored dough squares.

Evenly sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the bacon and dough.

Place the baking pan into the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown on top and cooked through.

Once baked, carefully remove the pan from the oven. Let the scones rest in the pan for 5 minutes to allow them to soak up all the delicious butter from the bottom.

Serve warm and enjoy your easy, cheesy, bacon-filled scones!
