Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 13x9-inch baking pan.

To prepare the streusel, stir together the 1/2 cup all purpose flour, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and 5 tablespoons melted salted butter in a small bowl until crumbly. Set aside.

To prepare the cake, whisk together the 2 cups all purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. Set this dry mixture aside.

In a separate large bowl, cream the 1 cup salted butter and 3/4 cup granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Add the 4 egg yolks one at a time to the creamed mixture, beating well after each addition to incorporate thoroughly.

Stir in the 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and the zest of 1 lemon into the butter mixture. Mix until just combined, then set aside.

In another separate clean bowl, beat the 4 egg whites until they form stiff peaks.

Alternately add the whisked dry ingredients and the beaten egg whites to the creamed butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Fold gently after each addition to avoid deflating the egg whites too much.

Spread the prepared cake batter evenly into the greased and floured 13x9-inch baking pan.

Scatter the 2 cups blueberries (or pitted cherries) evenly over the batter.

Sprinkle the prepared streusel topping evenly over the fruit.

Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Cool the cake in the pan before slicing. Serve slightly warm or at room temperature. If desired, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
