Preheat your oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced yellow onion and sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.

Stir in the can of cream of chicken soup, then add the jar of Cheez Whiz and the milk. Stir continuously over medium heat until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Do not allow it to boil.

Season the cheese mixture with garlic powder and black pepper to taste, stirring to incorporate.

Gently stir in the microwaved broccoli florets and cooked white rice. Break up any large broccoli chunks as you stir to ensure even distribution.

Pour the entire mixture into the greased baking dish, spreading it evenly.

Top the casserole with the shredded sharp cheddar cheese.

Bake uncovered for 30 minutes, or until the casserole is golden, bubbly, and the cheese is melted and slightly browned.

Remove from the oven and let the casserole sit for a few minutes before serving. This allows it to set and thicken slightly.
