In a large bowl, mash the rinsed and drained black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but still with some texture.

Add the diced red onion, minced garlic, diced bell pepper, bread crumbs, egg, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper to the mashed black beans. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form them into patties, about 3/4 inch thick. Ensure they are firm enough to hold their shape.

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Carefully place the black bean patties in the hot skillet. Cook for 5-7 minutes per side, or until golden brown and heated through. Adjust heat as necessary to prevent burning.

While the burgers are cooking, toast the brioche buns.

Assemble the burgers: Spread mayonnaise and/or ketchup on the toasted brioche buns. Place a cooked black bean patty on the bottom bun, then top with lettuce, tomato slices, red onion slices, and avocado. Cover with the top bun and serve immediately.
