Gather four Old Fashioned or rocks glasses. Prepare your orange by peeling a wide strip of zest from the fruit, ensuring minimal white pith.

In each glass, combine 1/2 teaspoon of granulated sugar (or 1/4 fluid ounce simple syrup), 2 dashes of Angostura bitters, and 1/2 teaspoon of water (if using granulated sugar).

If using granulated sugar, gently muddle the ingredients in each glass until the sugar is mostly dissolved. If using simple syrup, a quick stir will suffice.

Add a large ice cube or sphere to each glass. Pour 2 fluid ounces of your chosen bourbon or rye whiskey over the ice.

Stir the cocktail gently with a bar spoon for about 30 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the drink. The goal is to achieve a balanced flavor and temperature.

To garnish, take an orange twist and express its oils over the drink by twisting it over the glass, then drop it into the cocktail. Add an optional Luxardo maraschino cherry if desired. Serve immediately.
