Bring a large pot of generously salted water to a rolling boil over high heat. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package directions until al dente, usually 8-10 minutes.

While the pasta cooks, prepare the garlic butter sauce. In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter with the olive oil over medium heat.

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. If using, stir in the red pepper flakes.

Before draining the pasta, reserve 1/2 cup of the starchy pasta water. Drain the remaining pasta thoroughly.

Add the drained pasta directly to the skillet with the garlic butter sauce. Pour in the reserved pasta water, chopped fresh parsley, salt, and black pepper.

Toss the pasta vigorously with tongs for 1-2 minutes until the sauce emulsifies and coats the pasta beautifully. The pasta water helps create a silky sauce.

Serve immediately, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
