Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, and ground cinnamon. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together the softened unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and light brown sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Add the mashed bananas and buttermilk to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. The mixture may look a little lumpy, which is fine.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix. If using, fold in the chopped walnuts or pecans.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly.

Bake for 55-65 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. If the top starts to brown too quickly, you can loosely tent it with aluminum foil.

Let the banana bread cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
