Preheat your oven to 375°F. Lightly grease an 8x8 inch baking dish or a 9-inch pie dish.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated. If using, stir in the melted butter. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.

In a separate medium mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, rolled oats, light brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon for the crumble topping. Mix well.

Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry topping ingredients. Using a pastry blender, a fork, or your fingertips, cut the butter into the mixture until coarse crumbs form. Some larger pea-sized pieces of butter are desirable.

Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple filling in the baking dish.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly and tender when pierced with a fork. If the topping browns too quickly, you can loosely cover it with aluminum foil.

Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly. Serve warm.
