Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

In a blender, combine the all-purpose flour, milk, large eggs, salt, and vanilla extract. Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and no lumps remain. This should take about 30-60 seconds.
Place the 5 tablespoons of unsalted butter into a 9x13 inch glass baking dish or a 10-inch cast-iron skillet.

Carefully place the baking dish with the butter into the preheated oven. Allow the butter to melt completely and become hot, about 3-5 minutes.

Once the butter is melted and sizzling, carefully remove the hot baking dish from the oven. Immediately pour the blended batter into the hot, buttered dish.

Return the baking dish to the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the German pancake is beautifully golden brown, puffed up around the edges, and set in the center.

Remove the German pancake from the oven. It will deflate slightly as it cools, which is normal. Serve immediately, dusted with powdered sugar or drizzled with maple syrup, as desired. It pairs wonderfully with fresh fruit like strawberries and bananas, or a side of bacon.
