Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F).

Grease a loaf pan.

In a large bowl, mash the 3 ripe bananas until mostly smooth.

Add the 1/2 cup of melted unsalted butter, 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 1 large egg, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the mashed bananas. Mix well with a whisk or spatula until all wet ingredients are thoroughly combined.

In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt until well combined.

Gradually add the whisked dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter.

If using, fold in the 1/2 cup of chocolate chips or nuts into the batter.

Pour the banana bread batter into the prepared loaf pan, spreading it evenly.

Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the banana bread comes out clean. The top should be golden brown.

Once baked, remove the loaf pan from the oven and let the banana bread cool in the pan for about 10-15 minutes before carefully transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Slice and enjoy your homemade banana bread!
