In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef with kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Avoid overmixing, as this can make the patties tough. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions. Form each portion into a patty about 1/2 inch thick and slightly wider than your hamburger buns, as they will shrink during cooking. Press a shallow indentation into the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent them from bulging.

Heat a large griddle or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat until hot.

Brush the cut sides of the hamburger buns with melted butter. Place the buns cut-side down on the hot griddle and toast for 1 to 2 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from griddle and set aside.

Place the beef patties on the hot griddle. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side for medium-rare, or longer for desired doneness.

During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of American cheese on top of each patty. Cover the griddle with a lid or a metal bowl to help the cheese melt quickly and evenly.

Transfer the cooked patties to the toasted buns. Layer with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and dill pickle chips. Serve immediately with your favorite condiments.
