In a large measuring cup, combine the warm water, active dry yeast, and sugar. Stir briefly to mix, then let the mixture sit for 10 minutes until a thin layer of foam forms on top, indicating the yeast is active.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, add the all-purpose flour and salt. Then, add the oil, the large egg, and the activated yeast mixture to the bowl.

Attach a dough hook to the stand mixer and knead the mixture for about 10 minutes until a cohesive dough forms. Transfer the dough to a clean surface and knead it by hand for a couple more minutes to ensure it is smooth.

Using a dough scraper, divide the smooth dough into 8 equal parts. Roll each part into a small, uniform ball.

Place the dough balls onto a greased baking sheet. Gently flatten each ball down a little. Cover the baking sheet (e.g., with another baking sheet or plastic wrap) and let the buns rest and rise for 30 minutes.

While the buns are rising, prepare the egg wash by whisking together 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of water in a small bowl.

After 30 minutes, uncover the risen buns. Brush the tops of all the buns with the egg wash. Optionally, sprinkle sesame seeds over half of the buns.

Preheat your oven to 400°F. Place the baking sheet with the buns into the preheated oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Once baked, remove the golden-brown buns from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
