Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8x8 inch baking dish or a 9-inch pie plate.

In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

In a separate medium bowl, prepare the crumble topping. Whisk together 1 cup all-purpose flour, light brown sugar, rolled oats, and salt.

Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using your fingertips, a pastry blender, or a fork, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.

Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple filling in the baking dish.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling and tender when pierced with a fork. If the topping starts to brown too quickly, you can loosely cover it with aluminum foil.

Remove the apple crumble from the oven and let it cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly.

Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
