Wash the green lentils thoroughly. Boil them in plenty of water until completely soft. Once soft, drain them and transfer to a large pot.

Slice the onions thinly. Place them in a pan with olive oil and caramelize them, stirring occasionally, first over high heat, then over low heat, until golden brown.

Add the washed basmati rice and half of the caramelized onions to the boiled lentils. Add black pepper, cumin, and salt. Add enough water to cover the ingredients and stir.

Once it starts to boil, cover the pot. Cook over low heat for approximately 20 minutes.

Turn off the heat and let the pilaf rest for 10 minutes.

Transfer to a serving dish, top with the remaining caramelized onions, and serve.
