Preheat your oven to 425°F. Place the 1/2 cup of unsalted butter into a 9x9 inch (or similar sized) glass baking dish and place it in the preheating oven to melt completely. Alternatively, melt the butter in the microwave.

In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

Pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients. Using a spatula, gently mix until just combined and a wet, shaggy dough forms. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough biscuits.

Carefully remove the baking dish with the melted butter from the oven. Pour the biscuit dough directly into the melted butter in the dish. Using your spatula, gently spread the dough evenly across the bottom of the dish, ensuring it's submerged in the butter.

Using a sharp knife, score the dough into 9 equal squares. This creates individual biscuits and helps them bake evenly. Do not cut all the way through to the bottom of the dish, just score the top.

Place the baking dish into the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top and cooked through. The butter will have bubbled up around the biscuits, creating a delicious 'swim' effect.

Remove the biscuits from the oven. Let them cool in the dish for a few minutes before serving. The biscuits will be incredibly tender and buttery. Serve warm.
