In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, 1/2 cup water, and brown sugar until the sugar is dissolved. In a separate small bowl, combine the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water to create a slurry; set aside.

Heat the vegetable oil in a medium saucepan or skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and finely diced onion, and sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened and fragrant, being careful not to brown the garlic.
