Preheat oven to 375°F. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Italian sausage, bread crumbs, 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, milk, egg, parsley, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Form the meat mixture into 1 1/2-inch meatballs. You should get about 16-20 meatballs.

Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides until a nice crust forms, about 5-7 minutes. You may need to do this in batches. Do not cook through.

Pour the marinara sauce over the browned meatballs in the skillet. Bring to a simmer, then cover and transfer to the preheated oven.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and tender.

While the meatballs are baking, prepare the hoagie rolls. Slice them lengthwise, but not all the way through, creating a hinge. You can lightly toast the rolls in a separate oven or toaster oven for 2-3 minutes if desired.

Once the meatballs are done, carefully remove the skillet from the oven. Spoon 4-5 meatballs and a generous amount of sauce into each hoagie roll. Top with 2 slices of provolone cheese.

Return the assembled subs to the oven (or a broiler) for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Watch carefully to prevent burning.

Garnish with extra grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil, if using. Serve immediately.
