Lightly grease four microwave-safe mugs with cooking spray or a little vegetable oil. Set aside.

In a medium bowl, mash the ripe bananas until mostly smooth with a few small lumps remaining.

Add the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the mashed bananas. Whisk until well combined.

In a separate large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until thoroughly combined.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently with a spoon or spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few small lumps are okay. Fold in any optional chocolate chips or chopped walnuts now, if using.

Divide the batter evenly among the four prepared mugs. Each mug should be about half full.

Microwave one mug cake at a time on high for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes, or until the cake is set and springs back when lightly touched. Cooking times may vary depending on your microwave's wattage. If the cake is still wet, microwave in 15-second increments.

Carefully remove the mugs from the microwave (they will be hot!). Let them cool for a minute or two before serving. Enjoy directly from the mug, or invert onto a plate if desired.
