Bring a large pot of generously salted water to a rolling boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package directions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes.

While the pasta cooks, melt the butter and olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced garlic and red pepper flakes. Cook gently for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the garlic is fragrant and lightly golden. Be careful not to burn the garlic.

Before draining the pasta, reserve 1 1/2 cups of the starchy pasta water. Drain the spaghetti and immediately add it to the skillet with the garlic butter sauce.

Add 1 cup of the reserved pasta water to the skillet. Toss the pasta vigorously with tongs, allowing the sauce to emulsify and coat the spaghetti. The pasta water helps create a silky, cohesive sauce. If the sauce seems too dry, add more pasta water, 1/4 cup at a time, until desired consistency is reached.

Stir in the fresh parsley, black pepper, and kosher salt. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Serve immediately, garnished with freshly grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
