Preheat your oven to 350°F. Lightly grease an 8x8 or 9x9 inch square baking dish.

Wash the apples thoroughly. Peel, core, and dice the apples into bite-sized pieces.

Place the diced apples into the prepared baking dish. Add the brown sugar, granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Squeeze the juice from half a lemon over the apple mixture. Mix all ingredients well with a spoon until the apples are evenly coated.

In a separate medium bowl, combine the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Mix these dry ingredients together.

Add the softened unsalted butter to the dry topping ingredients. Use your hands to mix and crumble the butter into the dry ingredients until a coarse, crumbly mixture forms.

Evenly sprinkle the prepared oat and butter topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish.

Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling.

Once baked, carefully remove the apple crisp from the oven. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving warm. Optionally, serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
