Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add the trimmed green beans and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until crisp-tender and bright green. Drain immediately and transfer to an ice bath (a bowl of ice water) to stop the cooking process and preserve their vibrant color. Once cooled, drain thoroughly and set aside.
In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes (if using) and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
Reduce the heat to low. Add the white miso paste, soy sauce, and water to the skillet. Whisk continuously until the miso paste is fully dissolved and the sauce is smooth and slightly thickened. This should take about 1-2 minutes.
Add the blanched green beans to the skillet with the miso butter sauce. Toss gently with tongs to ensure the green beans are evenly coated. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, just to heat the beans through and allow them to absorb the flavors.
Transfer the Miso Butter Garlic Green Beans to a serving dish. Garnish with sesame seeds and freshly chopped chives before serving hot.
