Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round baking pan with butter.

In a small saucepan, melt 1/4 cup unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the light brown sugar and stir until dissolved and bubbling, about 2-3 minutes. Pour this caramel mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.

Arrange the sliced apples in a decorative pattern over the caramel base in the pan. Drizzle the 1/4 cup honey over the apples and sprinkle with ground cinnamon.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, cream together the 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.

Beat in the large eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Carefully spoon the cake batter evenly over the apple and caramel topping in the baking pan. Gently spread to cover all the apples.

Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a wooden skewer or toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 15 minutes. This allows the caramel to set slightly but remain fluid enough for easy release.

Place a serving plate upside down over the cake pan. Carefully and quickly invert the cake onto the serving plate. Scrape any remaining caramel or apples from the pan onto the cake, if necessary. Serve warm.
