Lightly grease a glass dish thoroughly with a small amount of the butter. Set aside.

Measure 1 cup of peanut butter and have it ready to add later.

In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and milk. Stir well to ensure the sugar is fully dissolved before turning on the heat.

Place the saucepan over high heat. Continue stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a rolling boil.

Once a rolling boil is achieved, immediately reduce the heat to medium. Insert a candy thermometer into the boiling mixture.

Allow the mixture to boil without stirring until it reaches the soft ball stage, which is between 235°F and 240°F on the candy thermometer.

Once the desired temperature is reached, remove the saucepan from the heat.

Immediately add the 1 cup of peanut butter to the hot mixture. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon or heat-resistant spatula until the peanut butter is fully incorporated and the mixture becomes thick and well combined.
Quickly transfer the hot fudge mixture into the prepared buttered glass dish. Spread the fudge evenly in the dish.

Allow the fudge to cool and set at room temperature for at least 1 hour before cutting into squares and serving.
