In a sturdy pitcher, combine the fresh basil leaves and granulated sugar. Gently muddle the basil and sugar together using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon. The goal is to release the basil's oils, not to shred the leaves.
Add the lime wedges to the pitcher and muddle them lightly with the basil and sugar. Press just enough to release the juice and oils from the lime.
