Preheat your oven to 375°F. Lightly butter an 8x8 inch or 9x9 inch baking dish.

Arrange a single layer of the thinly sliced sweet potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish, overlapping them slightly.

Evenly sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar over the sweet potato layer. Drizzle with about 1 tablespoon of melted butter.

Repeat the layering process with the remaining sweet potatoes, sugar, and melted butter, ensuring each layer of sweet potatoes is followed by sugar and butter, until all ingredients are used. The top layer should be sweet potatoes drizzled with butter and sprinkled with sugar.

Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes, allowing the sweet potatoes to soften.

Remove the foil and continue baking for another 25 to 30 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are very tender, caramelized, and golden brown on top. A knife inserted into the center should meet no resistance.

Carefully remove the gratin from the oven and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. This allows the gratin to set slightly and makes for easier serving.
