In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, vanilla bean pod, vanilla bean seeds, and granulated sugar. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is hot and steaming but not boiling. Do not let it boil.

Remove the vanilla bean pod from the milk mixture. If desired, use an immersion blender or whisk vigorously to create a frothy texture. Alternatively, you can use a milk frother.

Divide the freshly brewed espresso or strong coffee evenly among four heatproof mugs.

Carefully pour the hot vanilla milk over the espresso in each mug. Serve immediately.
