Begin by preparing the bread. Take the slices of stale sandwich bread and carefully cut off all the crusts. Discard the crusts or save them for another use.

Place the de-crusted bread pieces into a large mixing bowl. Pour 1/4 cup of milk over the bread. Using your hands, mash the bread and milk together thoroughly until it forms a cohesive, dough-like mixture. If the mixture is too dry, add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until it's pliable.

Divide the bread mixture into 12-16 equal portions. Roll each portion into a smooth ball. Then, for each ball, carefully poke a hole through the center using your finger or the handle of a wooden spoon to create a donut shape. Set the formed donuts aside on a plate.

Pour the vegetable oil into a deep, heavy-bottomed pan or Dutch oven. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F. If you don't have a thermometer, you can test the oil by dropping a small piece of bread mixture into it; it should sizzle immediately and turn golden brown within 30-60 seconds.

Carefully place 3-4 bread donuts into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and puffed up. Use tongs to flip them and ensure even browning.

Once golden brown, remove the fried donuts from the oil using tongs and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil. Repeat with the remaining donuts.

While the donuts are still warm, dip one side of each fried donut into the chocolate sauce, coating it evenly. Immediately after dipping, sprinkle generously with your favorite sprinkles. Arrange the finished donuts on a serving platter.

Serve the bread donuts warm and enjoy!
