Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

Add 1 pound of ground beef and 1/2 pound of ground sausage to the skillet. Break up the meat with a spoon and cook until it is completely browned. Once browned, drain any excess fat from the skillet.

Add 1 large chopped onion to the skillet with the cooked meat. Sauté the onion, stirring occasionally, until it has softened.

Stir in 3 minced garlic cloves and cook for an additional 1 minute until the garlic becomes fragrant.

Add 1 head of cored and chopped green cabbage to the skillet. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage wilts down.

Pour in 1 (15 ounce) can of tomato sauce and 1 (14.5 ounce) can of undrained diced tomatoes.

Add 1/2 cup of uncooked white rice and 1 cup of beef broth to the mixture.

Season the dish with 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika.

Stir all the ingredients together thoroughly. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the skillet and let it cook until the rice is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed.

For a nicely browned top, uncover the skillet and transfer it to a preheated oven. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the top is slightly browned and bubbly.

Serve the unstuffed cabbage rolls hot. Garnish with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of fresh parsley, if desired.
