Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a muffin tin with 12 paper liners or grease generously.

In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, salt, and ground cinnamon (if using). Set aside.

In a separate medium bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork until mostly smooth but with a few small lumps remaining.

Add the lightly beaten large eggs, melted unsalted butter, milk, and vanilla extract to the mashed bananas. Mix well until just combined.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir with a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.

If using, gently fold in the chocolate chips or chopped walnuts.

Divide the batter evenly among the 12 muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds full.

Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.

Remove the muffin tin from the oven and let the muffins cool in the tin for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
