In a small bowl, whisk together all ingredients for the stir-fry sauce: soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, cornstarch, water, and red pepper flakes. Set aside.

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess fat.

Add the chopped yellow onion to the skillet with the beef and cook for 2-3 minutes until softened.

Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Add the broccoli florets to the skillet. If using fresh broccoli, cook for 3-5 minutes until tender-crisp. If using frozen, cook according to package directions, usually 5-7 minutes, until heated through and tender.

Give the prepared stir-fry sauce a quick whisk again, then pour it over the beef and broccoli. Cook, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the ingredients.

Remove from heat and stir in the sesame oil. Serve immediately over cooked rice, if desired, and garnish with toasted sesame seeds.
