Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan.

In a large bowl, mash the 2 large very ripe bananas until smooth. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, cream together the 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1/2 cup granulated sugar using an electric mixer until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Beat in the 2 large eggs one at a time, ensuring each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next. After the eggs, stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

Add the mashed bananas to the wet ingredients mixture and mix thoroughly. In a separate bowl, whisk together the 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Gradually add these dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until they are just combined. Avoid overmixing the batter.

Gently fold in the 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans and 1/4 cup chocolate chips (if using).

Pour the prepared batter evenly into the greased and floured 9x5 inch loaf pan.

Bake the banana bread in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes. To check for doneness, insert a wooden skewer into the center of the loaf; it should come out clean.

Allow the banana bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before carefully transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Once cooled, slice and enjoy your homemade banana bread.
