Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the dry pasta and cook according to package directions until al dente. Before draining, reserve 1/4 cup of the pasta water.

While the pasta is cooking, place 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter into a large pan or skillet on the stove over medium heat. Melt the butter until it's fully liquid.

Add the 1/2 finely chopped onion to the melted butter in the pan. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the onion starts to soften.

Add the 4-5 minced cloves of garlic to the pan with the onions. Cook for another minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.

Stir in 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes, and 1 teaspoon oregano to the ingredients in the pan. Stir well to combine the spices with the butter, onion, and garlic.

Pour the 1/4 cup reserved pasta water into the pan. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally.

Add the 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese to the pan. Stir continuously until the cheese has melted and the sauce is smooth and slightly thickened.

Add the 8 ounces (225 g) of cooked dry pasta to the pan with the sauce. Toss the pasta thoroughly with the sauce ingredients using tongs or a spatula until every strand is well coated.

If using, sprinkle 1 teaspoon of basil over the pasta. Give it one final stir to incorporate the basil.
