In a rocks glass, place the sugar cube or granulated sugar. Add the angostura bitters and a splash of water (about 1/2 teaspoon).

Muddle the sugar and bitters until the sugar is mostly dissolved. If using a sugar cube, ensure it breaks down.

Add a large ice cube or several smaller ice cubes to the glass.

Pour the bourbon over the ice.

Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 20-30 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the drink.

Twist an orange peel over the drink to express its oils, then drop it into the glass as a garnish.
