Measure the Chex cereal into a large bowl and set aside.

In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and unsalted butter. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir well. Continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until the mixture is smooth and melted.

Stir the vanilla extract into the melted chocolate mixture.

Pour the chocolate mixture over the Chex cereal in the large bowl. Gently stir with a rubber spatula until the cereal is evenly coated.

Pour the powdered sugar into a large 2-gallon resealable plastic bag. Add the chocolate-coated cereal to the bag. Seal the bag and shake gently until the cereal is completely coated with powdered sugar.

Spread the muddy buddies onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to cool and set for at least 15 minutes. Once cooled, stir in the optional M&M's and Christmas sprinkles.

Serve immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
